NexTier Energy, LLC (NTE) is an oil & gas consulting firm based in Dallas, TX. NTE’s two partners, Stephen D. Smith (Steve) and Michael D. Burnaman (Mike), have over 90 years of combined experience working in conventional and unconventional plays in 60 countries across the globe—often with their “boots on the ground.” They were instrumental in developing the first unconventional play in Texas' Barnett Shale.
Driven by research and analysis, they conquer the challenges of nonconventional energy production with intensity and knowledge. While their experience in conventional, unconventional project development, project management, drilling, completion and production is virtually unsurpassed, Steve and Mike are involved daily in unconventional reservoir exploration, development, and reserves assessment in North America, South America, Asia, Africa, and Australia/New Zealand.
Mike led the team which developed the agenda for the first gas shale conference in China, while coauthoring and publishing papers presented during the history-making event. Co-sponsors of the symposium were Yangtze University, PetroChina, and Harding Shelton Energy Consultants (Beijing) Limited (HSEC). As president of HSEC, Mike continued to lead the team in drilling and completing the first gas and oil shale wells ever drilled and completed in China as well as providing “data exchange and development” between the USA and Chinese companies and employees.
